Student satellites fly freely on their orbit in space

Sometimes I wonder / worry about the future of education in the U.S., particularly science education, then I read a story like this. I remember a time when students only launched souped – up model rockets, then remote – controlled aircraft, & the rockets didn’t even go very far into the atmosphere. The times, they are a – changing. Hopefully the conservatives won’t cut funds for education down to the bone.

For three student teams, the dream of building and working on a real space mission is coming true. At 01:50 CEST (23:50 GMT) today, a trio of student-built CubeSats were released into space as part of ESA’s Education Office ‘Fly Your Satellite!’ programme.

Are Flat-Earthers Being Serious?

They probably fall in with the ranks of those who believe in a 6,000 year – old Earth, & that the lunar landings were staged in a Hollywood studio. People usually believe the input of their senses, but then they go believing in Hell, Heaven, demons, angels, UFOs / alien abductions, out – of – body & Near Death Experiences, ” ancient astronauts “, fairies in a meadow, etc., sometimes without the slightest scintilla of an inkling of evidence.

I find Flat – Earthers & Young Earth Creationists to be somewhat bothersome, even though people usually stick by their beliefs & sometimes are pretty quick to defend them, fueled by adrenaline.

I believe that the universe has lots of surprises in store for us, & these archaic, errant beliefs have NO PLACE in modern 21st century Earth ( Be it flat OR round ), even they cling to them tenaciously.

Members of the Flat Earth Society claim to believe the Earth is flat. Are they kidding?

Nine Real NASA Technologies in ‘The Martian’

This is an interesting article even though I haven’t seen the movie ( DVD released today ). Mars has been touted as being the most Earthlike planet in our solar system, & I’ve heard claims that it could be terra – formed within a 50 year time span ( But 1st you need a better, stronger magnetosphere to keep radiation from reducing your effort to dry, desiccated, rusty ruin with oxygen & H2O molecules dismantled ). I think humankind’s 1st viable colonies will be underground & under domes for many centuries.

& I think the plan to send ” Martian colonists ” is a potentially suicidal pipe – dream, UNLESS the companies funding the exploration send unmanned craft with building supplies, food, equipment as the bare bones of a settlement 1st. Otherwise, like I said, it’s nothing except a badly thought – out, ill – executed, suicidal pipe – dream.

But trips to Mars have been a dream of humanity’s ever since humanity began to dream of life on other worlds, then among the stars. Hopefully we’ll realize it, & not repeat the same mistakes we have on Earth.

In memory of David Bowie, Major Tom, aka ” Ziggy Stardust “. I hope your spaceship safely found its way to its destination. This is Ground Control…..

Andy Weir’s “The Martian” tells the story of Mark Watney, a NASA astronaut stranded on Mars. He must improvise and innovate to survive. NASA is already working on some of the technologies he uses to try to stay alive.

Map Of The Universe Poster | YourStarForever

I know it’s part of an online catalog, but I’ve seen this ” map ” of the known universe earlier.

Just think – Our relatively small spark of light with its collection of 8 planets ( originally ** 9 **, thanks to Professor Neil deGrasse Tyson demoting Pluto. 🙂 ) is somewhere in that graphic representation of everything that surrounds us & our class G home star Sol.

I just thought some cosmic perspective would be a good way to start out this New Year.

Happy 2016 to one & all !observable-universe-logarithmic-image-square

Not quite the celebration of Advent –

BUT it IS getting close.

In any of its 2 – 3 ( ? ) Incarnations, The Twilight Zone has been MORE than a science – fiction, fantasy, adventure series.

In fact, back in its Golden Age, it really broke ground on topics such as human rights, race – relations, politics, belief, the workings of the human mind, & related areas.

They had 2 Christmas episodes that became part of the 1980’s reboot, one  being in the classic version. BOTH unforgettable, & both quite capable of eliciting a lump in the throat – ” Night of The Meek ” & an episode based on an Arthur C. Clarke short story, ” The Star “.

My friends, I reach into my Serling – esque bag to give you the 1980’s Twilight Zone Version of Arthur C. Clarke’s ” The Star “, as an early Christmas / Yule / holiday – time present ( Provided the link works. IT BETTER. 🙂 2115 hours – Maybe you could look it up on Youtube. It is a GOOD episode )

EUROPA REPORT Trailer, Poster, Images!

This sounds almost like an alternative prequel to the film ” 2010 : The Year We Make Contact ” & I think I’d pay good money to see this movie. Based on science we ( mostly ) have now, & a LITTLE more believable than a film like ” Avatar ” or ” Prometheus “.
Europa is a reasonable candidate for life on another body in the solar system.
Thanks to ” The Daily Galaxy ” for the link here.
We have the official poster, images and a teaser trailer for Sebastian Cordero’s sci-fi thriller EUROPA REPORT!

Made In Space Archinaut to 3D Print Large Structures in Space – 3D Printing Industry

Here I enthuse again about 3 – D ” Printing ” –
As long as humans can supply the right materials, these devices are going to be able to turn out just about anything.
& if a 3 – D ” Printing ” facility can be located in outer space ( Near Earth Orbit orbit or between Earth & the Moon ), the less the chance of it becoming a source of toxic waste like facilities on Earth have a tendency to become.
For the time being, it’s science fiction, but sometimes fiction can become fact. Big Business can actually help the average guy, no matter where they live.
Something ( else ) to think about when you look up at a full Moon rising in a night sky, or Hell, even in the daytime. PROGRESSIVES !

Xjet to Launch Revolutionary Inkjet Metal 3D Printing Nanotechnology – 3D Printing Industry

You can tell I really, REALLY like 3 – D ” Printing ” after that previous post, I’ll assume.
Instead of a resinous substance, the Israelis have learned how to use a metallic compound. My interest is peaking.
I don’t know if a license should be required now & in the future or not, just to keep the technology in ethical hands ( as in hands that won’t use a 3 – D ” printer ” to create a weaponized anthrax analogue ).

Jet-Propelled 3D-Printed Drone Claims Speed Record

Now imagine the peacetime, non – military uses of ” printing ” equipment & resources with 3 – D ” Printing ” technology ( I prefer something more like ” fabrication ” or ” replication “, but hey, while we’re here, let’s go with ” printing ” ).
Universal donor blood & marrow. Synthetic skin for burn victims. Joints & bone – grafts, prosthetics.
Tools used in space travel ( A 3 – D printer is 1 of the items ready to be sent to the ISS, which could bode well for a space station supposedly scheduled to be decommissioned in 2020 much like the Mir was ). Military & emergency civilian MREs ( Meals ), 1st – aid supplies, automotive parts, computer components. Even my DENTIST uses a 3 – D ” printer ” to design fillings & crowns.
Inevitably this technology will become available to the average person, & best – case scenario, we’ll use it for constructive purposes rather than building better meth – labs, I would hope.
I’d prefer having it to design my own mini – helicopter. 🙂
A new jet-powered drone might be the most complex flying machine ever built using 3D printing.
