I would love to get my own drone with my motivation being sheer curiosity & because I will likely never pilot a manned / crewed aircraft, small OR large. I can thank a National Geographic segment about British expat Reginald Denny for fanning the flames as well as a YouTube short 2 – minute movie showing an aerial view of the Swiss countryside & a small feature about single – use cardboard ( YES, cardboard….. ) supply drones.
A camera with HD capabilities thereon would make things really interesting…..
A lot of disparate cultures & ethnic groups are believed to have shaped the ” New World ” : Chinese anchor stones have been found in California, an obscure item called ” The Bat Creek Stone ” in Eastern TN – inscribed with paleo Hebrew script, pottery not too dissimilar to Japanese Jomon ware, for example, & the controversial 9,000 year – old ” Spirit Cave Man ” & Kennewick Man with Caucasian bone structures. But Vikings & early Mediterranean seafarers seem to be the favorite of scholars almost globally.
As I’m 1 / 4th Cherokee, I wonder if the early Native Americans met & mingled with other travelers & traders ( & by ” mingled “, I mean intermarried, intercourse, reproduction, family groups, family trees….. 🙂 ). It would certainly mean revising a LOT of history & getting used to new perspectives, challenging & puncturing many preconceived ideas & concepts.
But that’s what discovery & exploration are ABOUT !
After being cooped up due to a mild ” blizzard ” ( In the mid – South, an INCH of snow qualifies as a ” blizzard “. 🙂 ) & being unable to leave my apartment ( Not a fan of frostbite or losing feeling in my appendages, that sort of thing. ), I both started to rediscover the mystic philosophical writings of Jalaluddin Rumi AND Symphony of Science on Youtube. Carl Sagan, Brian Cox, Professor Michio Kaku, Stephen Hawking, Neil deGrasse Tyson & ALMOST a cast of thousands – maybe dozens, at least. Auto – tuned physicists, astronomers, planetary geologists & anthropologists !
Fun with science ! I only hope I cut & pasted the link correctly. I’ve had trouble with that in the past…..
A little something to take our minds off of the crummy weather outside.
It’d be great if the New Horizons probe sent to observe Pluto could be re – directed to head towards this ” new ” planet, but it is / was moving at an unusually high speed compared to past Earth probes, & I guess reprogramming the craft to alter its course would be difficult. Still, a future unmanned mission there would be a real feat. As chilly as it is now to a lot of us, I’m sure this new 9th world would make wintertime Earth look like Tahiti, Bora Bora or Arizona in the height of summer.
The neat thing is that there are extremeophiles – Flora & fauna that can exist anywhere on Earth, adapt & even THRIVE – in even the most inhospitable of environments = The geothermal vents undersea, deserts like the Atacama & the Gobi, Antarctica, etc.
Bacteria were even found on a piece of a Soviet probe retrieved from the near – vacuum of the Moon.
So – life of SOME kind, even if it’s unicellular or similar to a lichen, could exist on this wanderer on the fringe of the solar system. <—– Dreams of going ice – fishing on the moon of Jupiter, Europa, so he says. 🙂
Nothing says HAPPY THANKSGIVING quite like fossils in 3 – D recreations !
As a collector of ( smaller, MUCH SMALLER ) fossils & an adolescent ” rockhound ” nerdboy, this is something I could seriously get into.
As in ” Wow ! “, ” nerdgasm “, indulging my inner science geek – guy. Not quite ” Jurassic Park ” but we all know what happened there….. 🙂
I took the photo below a couple of years back & tinkered with it at the University of TN campus, Knoxville, TN, BTW.
This sounds almost like an alternative prequel to the film ” 2010 : The Year We Make Contact ” & I think I’d pay good money to see this movie. Based on science we ( mostly ) have now, & a LITTLE more believable than a film like ” Avatar ” or ” Prometheus “.
Europa is a reasonable candidate for life on another body in the solar system.
Thanks to ” The Daily Galaxy ” for the link here.
We have the official poster, images and a teaser trailer for Sebastian Cordero’s sci-fi thriller EUROPA REPORT!
