The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)

I remember these movies ! Dr. Phibes was like a more current Batman villain ( Think Harvey Dent / ” Two – Face ” with both sides of his face hideously disfigured a la 60’s Dr. Doom or an evil version of Darkman ) with a liberal sprinkling of 1960’s Batman – series campiness set in the 1920’s with steampunk technology.

Of course if they made ” Dr. Phibes ” movies today, the violence would be EVEN MORE graphic.

Artificial Intelligence Beats ‘Most Complex Game Devised by Humans’

A very clever system. If they invent one that can count cards, keep it away from Vegas or Tunica, MS, or it’ll be sleeping with the fishes. 🙂 Where’s the next version of Bobby Fischer when you need him ( or her ) ? Such intelligence has plenty of other uses, as this article says.

Will the T – 800 Terminator start out playing games ?

An artificial intelligence system has used “deep learning” to defeat a professional Go player, solving one of the landmark challenges in AI.

New Foldable Battery Takes Cue from Chinese Calligraphy

This is a very interesting idea. Future tech that’s foldable. Very convenient. Foldable tech is not new, in 2010 or thereabouts a foldable ” monitor ” with LCD technology was introduced. A similar concept was introduced in the all – too – short – lived ” Battlestar Galactica ” prequel ” Caprica ” for data storage & transmission.

Yankee ingenuity needs to be cranked up a notch, I think.

From your friendly chronicler of science fiction being birthed into fact —–

Scientists in China have developed a flexible, rollable, foldable battery inspired by traditional Chinese calligraphy involving ink on paper.

Molten Salt Reactors

I was in an online debate about nuclear – energy as a ( relatively ) ” safe ” alternative to fossil fuels. I’m still reading up the subject. The debate got about as hot as a nuclear core in Mt. St. Helens ! NO fuel – source is going to be 100 % fool – proof & fail – safe. Baby – boomers still have memories of Three Mile Island, Chernobyl & NOW Fukushima fresh in our memories.

Apparently molten salt reactors are VERY safe, according to 1 fellow who stood up in favor of nuclear power being clean & dependable alternatives to fossil fuels mucking with our air currents, weather patterns, heat & cold dissipation & releasing toxins that can come back & get into our water – table. Nuclear would be a FAN – DAMN – TASTIC option if it weren’t for the fact that radioactive toxins can leech into soil & water.

And then, what about nuclear – powered aircraft carriers ? Unless I haven’t done all my research, no significant problems have happened with them. But nuclear power still has a ” bogeyman ” stigma about in environmental circles discussing alternative sources. All due to ** 3 ** very unfortunate incidents. I think maybe it’s time to re – think things. That discussion was the pebble that got the avalanche a – rollin’, at least in 1 Google + thread.

Molten Salt Reactor use molten fluoride salts as primary coolant, at low pressure. Much of the interest today in reviving the MSR concept relates to using thorium (to breed fissile uranium-233)..

Bernie Sanders: Democratic Socialist

This is too true : too many people link ” Socialist ” & ” Communist ” together. This guy took the words right out of my ” mouth ” ( in a manner of speaking ). Sanders is a NEW ( to some ) type of Democrat & an alternative to the GOP – ” Party of ‘ NO ‘, also of fear, paranoia, hatred & bigotry “. I’m sorry, but it’s true, & the Hillary Clinton Democrats who want to be beholden to Big Business. He seems to be a very viable candidate.

Ted Cruz Welcomes Endorsement Of Pastor Who Believes Oprah Is Antichrist Forerunner

I’m hardly a big fan of Oprah, but this is whacko – times – whacko. & while I’m not against religion – as long as it’s not jammed in my face, etc. – This IHOP ( Couldn’t / Shouldn’t International House of Pancakes be allowed to sue on grounds of copyright infringement ? ) sounds like a potential Heaven’s Gate / People’s Temple / Branch Davidian operation. I could be wrong & it could be like another Harold Camping ” end – of – the – world prophecy – of – the – month ” that only a relative few take seriously. & they’re WRECKING the GOP’s credibility. A LOT. Or they’re helping erode it quite a bit.

Hence my belief that any religious institution that supports a political stance or a particular candidate / set thereof should have their tax – exempt status REVOKED. Taken away. Raptured in the blink of an eye ! Or maybe we should send them ” thank you ” notes for helping weed out the religious extremists. After all, we DID fight a war & I think the ” hot button ” issue was separation of Church & State.

Sen. Ted Cruz welcomed the endorsement from a radical Christian extremist, Mike Bickle, founder of the International House of Prayer (IHOP)

Was A Buddhist Monk Responsible For The Paris Climate Agreement?

I wouldn’t be surprised much. He has been a gentle, quiet catalyst for change. The very nature of Buddhism discourages calling attention to the ego, the ” I “. Ego is merely an illusion, while change is the essence of life. Still, while Buddhists are detached – in a sense – from the material world & material life, possessions, wealth, & other such, they / we should be mindful of the Earth & respectful of the environment which surrounds us, & mindful that we’re not separated from it. ” Man vs. Nature ” has no place in Buddhist & other Eastern thinking ( In fact, being roughly 1 / 4th Native American Cherokee, the thinking is that man doesn’t ” possess ” land, we are merely temporary guardians of it for our span on Earth – 1 reason why Buddhist & Daoist / Taoist thought has such appeal to me. My Cherokee heritage likes it ! )

Thich Nhat Hanh – Silent agent of change. Good on you.

Christiana Figueres, who led the climate talks, credits Thich Nhat Hanh with having played a pivotal role in helping her forge the deal.
