Harlan Ellison, AKA Cordwainer Bird, & Should I Meet my hero While He’s Still in the Flesh ?

I’ve heard the saying ” Never meet your heroes / role models “.

OOOOKAY. That being said, I would really like to meet Harlan Ellison, even with his reputation for being sharp – tongued, & having a barbed wit that would make Gregory House, M.D. seem like St. Francis or Gandhi.

The main reason being that he is a prolific, original writer primarily of science – fiction ( Although he prefers ” Literature of the Fantastic ” ). He has had to slow down, after a number of bypasses, & a stroke. He has had a contentious relationship with television, after writing a script for an award – winning episode of the original Star Trek resulting in friction between himself & Gene Roddenberry ( City on the Edge of Forever ), & a pilot script & series ” bible ” for a Canadian Broadcasting series called ” The Starlost ” which had a short run. Both scripts had been altered by other writers & directors for ” convenience ” sake, to fit shooting schedules, other yadda – yadda & etc. He believes in integrity, & that the author’s vision is almost SACRED.

Admirable trait. BTW : He & Isaac Asimov collaborated on a script centered on Asimov’s ” I, ROBOT ” stories which unfortunately received roughly the same treatment as ” City on the Edge of Forever ” & ” The Starlost ” & wound up in ” development Hell / Limbo ” even though it was novelized & I have a copy of said novel, probably still packed away after 3 moves.

He still writes / wrote on a manual typewriter until illness tried to still his creative hand forever. He expressed a desire to beat the Faceless One about the head & shoulders with his own arm ( s ). He’s still a contentious, cranky, but creative mensch. Admirable traits in certain situations !

& one has to admire a man who can verbalize a short story in roughly 11 minutes, 32 seconds with but a single pause.

People – I present Harlan Ellison’s ” Prince Myshkin, and Hold the Relish ” in its fast – paced glory. Enjoy !
