It just seems to arrive earlier each year, doesn’t it ?
NO, NO – NOT Christmas. Santa / Kris Kringle / Father Christmas / Sinter Klaas old pal & sometimes traveling companion The One & Only Krampus ! Straight from Teutonic / Germanic, possibly Nordic folklore. He would appear to make the Grinch look like St. Francis, Mother Teresa & Mahatma Gandhi all in one.
But the Krampus is the ” yin ” to Santa’s / Father Christmas’ ” yang “. He is karma for the disobedient, bad, misbehaving kids. He’s their worst nightmares. He stuffs disobedient young ‘uns in a sack of his own & beats them senseless ( Or possibly worse. Records are unclear or non – existent on ” or worse ” ). One science fiction / fantasy writer – whose name escapes me at the moment – wrote a story for the 1980’s re – boot of ” The Twilight Zone ” called ” Knackles ” which would appear to be similar to the Krampus. His script was considered so ” scary ” & subversive for a Christmas episode by CBS that they basically told the author to leave. Now. Presumably never to return.
Is the Krampus any spookier than Marley’s ghost, or the Grim Reaper – like Ghost of Christmas Future, really ? They’re all basically myth, folklore & fiction.Monsters, revenants, ghosts and specters have no place during a season of warmth, joy, happiness, family, not to mention a celebration of life, yes ? Again, I invoke Scrooge & his spectral friends from ” A Christmas Carol “, even though the spirits were there to show Scrooge the ” right ” path. The Krampus is basically an agent of punishment / karma. He ( it ? ) taps into fears of retribution ( I’ll try to refrain from usage of ” karma “. No guarantees . 🙂 ) & punishment without lessons learned & lives changed, etc. Somewhat primal, a possibly Neanderthal part of our psyche when early man was more likely to jump at shadows.
I’m doing this to improve my writing mojo, my WordPress updates haven’t shown much in my e – mail lately, so I have to check without updates.
And when I put the tree up roughly a month from now, perhaps I’ll put a Krampus shrub. 🙂
